Arsecast Extra Episode 377 – 12.10.2020

Welcome to another Arsecast Extra, the Arsenal podcast, with myself and James from @gunnerblog.

On this Interlull episode of the Arsecast Extra, James has to deal with bits of himself literally falling out of his own body, before we discuss the big story of the weekend – the Project Give All The Money To The Big Clubs. Are there potential benefits to the game, or is this a piece of rank, cynical opportunism? We also chat about the decision to charge £14.95 for pay-per-view games on Sky Sports and BT Sports, the absence of William Saliba from our Europa League squad, Arsene Wenger’s upcoming book, Edu’s interview with the official site and lots more.

Remember, you can send us questions via which we’ll try and get to each week. Send them to either @arseblog or @Gunnerblog (or both) using the hashtag #arsecastextra. Best to send them Monday morning so … Read the rest

All smiles: New Man United signing pictured in training kit

Manchester United fans are plenty excited to see their new signing Facundo Pellistri in action and it seems he’s equally thrilled to be at the club.

The young winger arrived from Peñarol on deadline day as a relative unknown but supporters are looking forward to his debut nonetheless.

Pellistri comes with a host of recommendations and praise, appearing to fit Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s transfer policy perfectly.

There are question marks over whether he’s ready for the first-team right away but supporters are willing to give him a chance to shine.

Mason Greenwood, Juan Mata, Daniel James and Jesse Lingard have all played in the right-wing spot over various periods but it certainly is a position Pellistri can make his own.

Wary Everton boss Ancelotti makes Liverpool declaration ahead of Merseyside Derby

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti isn’t reading too much into Liverpool’s 7-2 loss at the hands of Aston Villa, and is wary ahead of the Merseyside Derby.

The Reds were (there is no other way to put it) destroyed at Villa park before the international break, and the players have been left to lick their wounds.

A handful of Liverpool stars have been away on international duty over the last fortnight, but will be headed back to Melwood before the weekend.

The Merseyside Derby is up next for the Reds and the Blues – and Ancelotti is refusing to get cocky ahead of the champions’ trip over Stanley Park.

We are confident,” the Italian told Evertonfc.com. “It doesn’t matter what happened last week, they are still a fantastic team with a fantastic manager. It will be a difficult game but we have confidence.

‘He is a Scouser at heart’ – Former Liverpool chief exec compares Klopp to Shankly

Liverpool continue to go from strength to strength under Jurgen Klopp.

In the five years since the German has been at the helm, they’ve lost a League Cup final, a Europa League final and a Champions League final.

However, they’ve also won a Champions League final and then followed it up with their first Premier League in 30 years.

Even the fact that they qualified for the finals they lost can be seen as a pattern. Klopp is a serial finalist and even if he doesn’t always win, it’s not for the want of trying.

The Reds supporters have taken him firmly to their hearts already, his mixture of genuine warmth, personality and charisma, a winning combination.

It’s not only the fans who have appreciated what the German has done for them in a relatively short space of time either.

“There is no facade with Jurgen. There is no show … Read the rest

The magazine that created the Ballon d’Or award, France Football, is holding awards for the best XI in the history of football. The 20 nominees for defensive midfielder and 20 nominees for offensive midfielder have come to light. Eight of them play or have played for Barcelona.

  • Pep Guardiola. Defensive midfielder. 1988-2006.

On this day doing ‘on this day’ was a bad idea

Morning.

I could look up the internationals to see who with an Arsenal connection played, but I can’t be arsed. It’s an Interlull. The sooner it’s over the better. So, what else to do on a day like this to fill the blog space but an ‘On this day’, as I delve back into the archives.

Young Gunner John Halls is going on loan to Stoke. He says:

“My aim is to try and impress Tony Pulis and get a regular place in the side and also impress Arsene Wenger because he has said I am still part of things at Highbury.”

He certainly impressed Tony Pulis because he signed permanently for Stoke that December, then had spells at clubs like Reading, Crystal Palace, Brentford and Aldershot Town.

Later, after football, he became a male model. Or just a model, I suppose, but when I say ‘male … Read the rest

Exciting: Young Man United star garners praise from South American legends

Manchester United fans may not have known who Facundo Pellistri was before he joined the club but it appears many Uruguayans do.

The young winger joined from Peñarol during the summer transfer window, sealing his move dramatically on deadline day.

United supporters may have been hoping to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho for the right-wing position but instead Ole Gunnar Solskjaer invested in two young wingers.

Amad Diallo was the other signing but he arrives in January, giving Pellistri a chance to make a mark quickly before that happens.

Edinson Cavani and former Red Devil Diego Forlan have both had plenty to say about the 18-year-old which should excite fans.

Liverpool & Man Utd devise project which will shift power to the elite & abolish the EFL Cup

Liverpool and Manchester United have been working together behind the scenes on potentially the biggest shake-up in English football since the foundation of the Premier League.

As revealed by the Telegraph, ‘Project Big Picture‘ will effectively tilt power in favour of the elite, stripping the bottom 14 clubs in the top division of having a vote in decision-making processes.

One glaring issue with this alone is that long-standing top-flight clubs such as our rivals Everton, who have spent a record 117 seasons playing at the pinnacle of English football, will no longer have a say.

Other changes listed in the report include a reduction of the number of teams in the Premier League from 20 to 18 – like the German Bundesliga – and abolishing the EFL Cup and Community Shield.

An interesting idea is one of the promotion system, which could involve both clubs up for … Read the rest

Real Madrid tipped to move for world class striker after he shines at international level with a current Real Madrid star

Although there’s no sign that Erling Haaland is looking to leave Borussia Dortmund anytime soon, there’s always been a feeling that his stay in Germany will simply be a pit stop on his way to something even bigger.

He’s proven that he’s an elite striker and he keeps thriving every time he steps up a level, so it’s easy to see him going to Real Madrid and tearing it up.

Mundo Deportivo have looked at that prospect again today, and it’s suggested that the move could be likely after Haaland linked up superbly with Martin Odegaard for Norway today.
