L’Equipe: Juventus interested in Lionel Messi

Juventus are among the teams interested in Barcelona star Lionel Messi, according to French newspaper L’Equipe.

The Argentine superstar has reportedly told Barca that he wishes to exercise a clause in his contract that will allow him to leave for free this summer, following a disappointing season, highlighted by an 8-2 hammering by Bayern Munich.

Despite the clause reportedly have an end date of June 2020, Messi’s team are arguing that the lockdown caused by the Coronavirus pandemic was an extenuating circumstance that should allow the date to be extended to the end of the revised football season.

Reports from Spain suggest that the Blaugrana are non-cooperative and club President Josep Maria Bartomeu has refused to meet with Messi to discuss the situation futhre,

By all accounts, Manchester City are the Argentine’s preferred destination where he would be reunited with former coach Pep Guardiola.

Report claims Man United midfielder has retired from international duty after a falling out

It does feel like most club sides see international football as an inconvenience rather than a matter of pride when it comes to letting players play for their country, so there is likely a lot of relief when someone retires from international duty.

Man United midfielder Nemanja Matic has 48 caps and 2 goals for Serbia, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be adding to that after a report from Serbian outlet Mozzart Sport.

They claim that he’s had a falling out with the Serbian FA over how certain things were handled, so he’s decided to retire from international duty.

Chelsea can immediately recoup €20m as Chilwell signing frees up outcast to move on

Usually one player coming in results in another leaving the club, and that appears to be the case with Chelsea and Ben Chilwell.

The Guardian reported that Chelsea signed the Leicester City man for a fee of around £50m, so it will be interesting to see if he lives up to that price tag.

Any doubters will wonder if Chelsea have made an error by paying so much, but it looks much better when you realise they can immediately get some money back by selling Emerson Palmieri.

Lichtsteiner: ‘I have no doubts about Pirlo as coach’

Former Juventus right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner has no doubts about Andrea Pirlo as Juventus coach and expains why a ‘Champions League Curse’ can’t enter into the mindset of Juventini.

The Swiss Express spent seven years in Turin, playing alongside Pirlo for many of them, and was the first player to score at the new stadium in an official match, assisted of course, by the Maestro.

“Seven years at Juventus is worth twenty in another club,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport, “There is a very high pressure and it is the club itself that creates it, making you understand how important it is to win.

“You have to be very strong mentally to resist, and Juve gets inside you day after day: they don’t talk to you often, but they give you ‘Juventinita’ by example. Del Piero, Buffon, Chiellini, Pirlo: I looked at them and learned.”

Barcelona are bracing themselves for an approach from Man United for Lionel Messi

The next few weeks at Barcelona are going to be fascinating, especially if Lionel Messi does manage to force his way out of the club.

The Argentine superstar is 33 so he probably has two or three years left at the highest level, so it does suggest that his next club will need to have a chance of immediate success.

It’s so easy to link him to Man City because of Pep Guardiola and their financial backing, but it also sounds like Man United are going to have a real run at trying to sign him.

They’ve been trying to sign a right sided forward all summer so Messi would be a perfect fit, while he would also bring a whole new level of threat that could elevate them to the elite level again.

Pirlo: ‘I want to bring back the enthusiasm’

New Juventus coach Andrea explained that he wants to bring back enthusiasm to the team, while confirming that Paulo Dybala will stay at the club while Gonzalo Higuain is set to leave.

Pirlo gave his first official press conference as Juventus coach and offered some insight into what he wants to bring to the team and what his playing style will be.

“I want to bring back the enthusiasm, propose a proactive football with great mastery of the game,” Pirlo explained to the gathered press.

“I told the boys two things: you always have to keep the ball and when you lose it, you must get it back quickly.

“I’m convinced that I’m in the right place at the right time. Tactically we could play with four or three at the back, I have no set formations.

“Enthusiasm must be brought day by day. We need to talk to the … Read the rest

‘Life is too short’ – Man City want to turn the page with UEFA

For years to come, the 2019/20 season which has taken over a year to complete, is bound to be talked about and remembered.

From the enforced suspension of all of the leagues because of COVID-19 to having to condense the end of the season into a period of a few weeks with games every few days, it has been totally unique.

One of the major sporting issues involved a potential Champions League ban for Manchester City after UEFA had accused them of Financial Fair Play (FFP) breaches.

An appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was ultimately successful for the Premier League club, and now chairman, Khaldoon al-Mubarak, wants to draw a line under the matter.

“Life is too short to carry grudges,” he said to Manchester City’s official website and cited by BBC Sport.

“It is one of the most prestigious competitions in the world of sports … Read the rest

Announcement: Making the case for the return of a three-man defence

Juventus are living an unprecedented time as they picked a coach with no previous experience and it feels like half the roster is for sale. Therefore, it’s a moment where there are no wrong ideas regarding what the go-to tactic in the upcoming season should be, and one based on a three-man defence makes a lot of sense.

I am not a massive fan of the more crowded back-line and, with Andrea Barzagli retired and Giorgio Chiellini on his last legs, it is no longer the crutch it used to be in difficult moments. It would have to be rebuilt and the players that are not used to it will have to be indoctrinated accordingly. It would take some time, butexplosive defenders like Matthijs De Ligt and Merih Demiral should have no issue learning it quickly. Leonardo Bonucci is way better in it, as he has to do less man-marking

Video: Kingsley Coman scores for Bayern against boyhood club PSG in the Champions League final

The deadlock has been broken in the 58th minute of the Champions League final and what a moment it is for Kingsley Coman.

Full-back Joshua Kimmich showed his world-class ability as he controlled the ball before floating a dangerous cross towards the far post.

PSG defender Thilo Kehrer looked lax as he couldn’t contest Coman, leaving the wide man to head the ball into the back of the net.

Coman came through the ranks at PSG before heading to Juventus and then Bayern Munich, the 24-year-old already has quite the trophy cabinet and is one step closer to adding the best competition in club football to that.
