Raonic Makes Masters 1000 Final Return

Milos Raonic advanced to his first ATP Masters 1000 final in four and a half years on Friday with a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The unseeded Canadian won 90 per cent of first-serve points (35/39) to reach his fourth Masters 1000 championship match (0-3) after one hour and 37 minutes. Raonic is through to his first final at the level since his runner-up finish to Novak Djokovic at the 2016 BNP Paribas Open final in Indian Wells.

“It would be incredible [to win an ATP Masters 1000 title]. Just generally as part of my career, it’s not just the past six months coming back [and] playing. Just with everything else, I want to go to heights I haven’t achieved yet and this is a part of it,” said Raonic. “This is what I’ve worked hard for with very clear, specific goals and I hope that I can get … Read the rest

Could this be the reason for Nemanja Matic's retirement from international duty?

Manchester United’s Nemanja Matic has announced his retirement from international duty.

The 32-year-old has made 48 appearances for Serbia, scoring two goals.

It is unfortunate timing for his national side, who are due to meet Norway in the Euro 2021 play-off semi-final in October.

The Serbian FA sports director Vladimir Matijasevic told Sky Sports: ‘Other than saying it was time for younger players to take over, Matic did not state any other specific reasons for quitting.

‘We respect his decision. He is 32 years old and he’s had an exerting club season. European club football is demanding and hence we are aware that we’ll have to inject fresh blood into the national team.’

Matic recently signed a new three-year contract at Old Trafford, which raised eyebrows due to his age.

The club’s usual policy for players of a similar age is to renew them on a year-by-year rolling contract.… Read the rest

“There’s a long way to go until October” – Klopp coy over Liverpool transfers

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has refused to rule out potential additional signings, after the Reds nicked Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiacos.

Speaking to the press ahead of the Community Shield showdown with Arsenal this weekend, the boss said there’s loads of time left.

Quoted by The Athletic’s James Pearce, Klopp said: “There’s a long way to go until October,” when asked about transfers. Full quote below:

Call us optimists, but that line from the manager sounds a lot different than if he’d said ‘we’re in for a quiet summer’ – perhaps something is on the horizon?

Reason for United star’s poor recent performances revealed, problems continue

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has been carrying an ankle injury according to the latest reports, which might explain his poor form towards the end of the season.

The young Englishman hasn’t really been himself after the lockdown period, though there are several factors to consider.

Rashford had just returned from a long-term injury and so was clearly struggling for sharpness, which was not helped by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to overplay him.

In fairness, the whole United team were pretty poor in the last few matches of the season as the lack of rotation in a congested period caught up with them.

It seems Rashford’s injury problems aren’t quite over yet but fans have been given some hope for his fitness ahead of the new season.

The Sadio Mane / Lionel Messi transfer story is categorically untrue…

We saw something today that irked us, slightly…

English newspapers have picked up on a one-paragraph report by Italian outlet TMW – notoriously unreliable when it comes to the transfer market – that says Sadio Mane’s entourage have sounded out Barcelona about the Senegalese heading to Camp Nou and replacing Lionel Messi – who has handed in a transfer request.

While it’s very likely that the Argentine legend will depart Barca this summer – most likely to Financial Fair Play’s Manchester City – Mane is going absolutely nowhere.

Not only will Liverpool not sell, but Barcelona cannot afford and the player himself doesn’t want to go. It didn’t take much digging to discover these three vital facts, either!

Mane is arguably the best attacker in the Premier League and we’re backing him to spearhead us to glory again in 2020/21. Barca can wallow in their own demise, entirely of their … Read the rest

Preview and Schedule: Tsitsipas Tries To Halt Opelka's Run

Reigning Nitto ATP Finals champion Stefanos Tsitsipas had not won a Western & Southern Open match entering the week. But the Greek star will play first-time Masters 1000 quarter-finalist Reilly Opelka for a spot in the last four on Wednesday evening.

Tsitsipas beat another big server, John Isner, on Tuesday. He has never faced Opelka in a tour-level match.

“I expect a difficult fight, a difficult battle. He has played John a few times and he holds a positive record against him, so I’m expecting better. I feel like there’s nothing wrong to expect better tomorrow,” Tsitsipas said. “I just need to be very well-prepared for that one. I’m sure there are going to be more rallies from the baseline and the serve is going to be more difficult to return, so I have to keep my focus at an even higher level.”

United fans buzzing after club announces new 5 year deal for 23yo star

Manchester United fans were delighted to see Dean Henderson sign a new contract after all the uncertainty over his future.

The young Englishman has seen himself suddenly being pushed for the number one spot after David de Gea‘s error-filled season.

Henderson isn’t just riding his luck, he had a remarkable campaign for Sheffield United and was instrumental in their success.

Those two factors combining has seen the goalkeeping prospect’s stock rise and there’s a real chance he could be United’s first-choice in the upcoming season.

With reports claiming Henderson won’t be loaned out and will compete with De Gea, the new contract certainly seems to confirm that.
