Hülkenberg Reflects on Racing Point Return in Germany: “That was one for the storybooks!”

At eleven o’clock on Saturday morning, Nico Hülkenberg had no clue what was about to unfold, but the German was attempting to Qualify for the Eifel Grand Prix just three hours later.

When Lance Stroll was unable to compete in Saturday morning’s free practice session at the Nürburgring, a call was made by the Otmar Szafnauer to Hülkenberg to drive for them again, having done so in the British and 70th Anniversary Grand Prix events at Silverstone in August.

Hülkenberg was able to qualify the car, albeit last on the grid, with his first track action coming when the green light came on at the start of Qualifying.

“Well, that was one for the storybooks!” said Hülkenberg.  “It’s certainly been an interesting Formula 1 season. I got the call from Otmar at 11am: I was sitting with a friend having a coffee! I then ran to the car Read the rest

Sebastian Vettel pinpoints sector one weakness at the Nürburgring | 2020 Eifel GP

Scuderia Ferrari German driver Sebastian Vettel admitted that the first sector at the Nurburgring was his key weakness after lapping half a second slower than his team mate in qualifying.

The  four-times world champion dropped out in the second round of qualifying in 11th place. Team mate Charles Leclerc made it through to Q3, lapping over half a second quicker than Vettel on their final runs.

“I was pretty happy with the laps I had but I was losing a lot of time in sector one,” said Vettel. “So we need to have a look.

Both Ferrari drivers tried the medium tyre compound for their first runs in Q2 before switching to the soft rubber. Vettel said the rubber just wasn’t quick enough.

“A lot of people tried them this morning,” he said. “Already this morning we found that they were quite a bit harder to warm up.

“It wasn’t that bad, … Read the rest

Renault DP World F1 Team’s Ricciardo and Ocon optimistic ahead of Saturday’s sessions

Renault DP World F1 Team drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon are feeling upbeat ahead of Saturday’s practice and qualifying sessions, after the weather put a stop to both Free Practice One and Two today at the Nürburgring.

A mix of fog and rain hampered free practice after it was deemed unsafe for the medical helicopter to fly during both sessions. Free Practice Two was cancelled an hour into the planned schedule. However, the forecast for Saturday is looking more promising with dry weather on the cards, which should allow Ricciardo and Ocon ample track time in order to get to grips with the German circuit ahead of Sunday’s race.

The dry weather would also mean that the drivers have an extra set of dry tyres to carry over, whereas they would normally have two. The extra set of tyres means they can put more mileage in on track … Read the rest

F1, Qualifying: live results and updates | 2020 Eifel GP

The big, scary Nordschleife version of the Nurburgring was completed in 1927. But after eventually proving too big and too scary for F1, Niki Lauda’s 1976 horror crash in the German Grand Prix forced a re-think, with the more manageable, more modern Grand Prix circuit opened in 1984, with a star-studded roll-call of F1 drivers. The modern circuit got off the mark with the 1984 European Grand Prix and the 1985 German Grand Prix. Falling off the calendar until 1995, it then hosted various races – in German, European and Luxembourg Grand Prix guise – up until 2013, before its 2020 return.

The Nordschleife it ain’t – but then that’s probably for the best. The modern circuit utilises the start-finish straight of the old Sudschleife track, before the drivers then tackle the tight right-hander at Turn 1 (Haug-Haken) and go on an enjoyable high-speed plunge down to the Dunlop-Kehre hairpin. … Read the rest

Steiner says Ilott ‘Not on the List’ of Potential 2021 Haas Drivers – Yet

Guenther Steiner says Callum Ilott is currently not on his list of potential drivers for the 2021 Formula 1 season, despite the Briton participating in his first free practice session this weekend in place of Romain Grosjean at the Nürburgring.

However, Steiner, the Team Principal of the Haas F1 Team, says this all could change if the current FIA Formula 2 racer excels behind the wheel as the team continue to evaluate who will race for them next season.

Steiner says Ilott is not on the list because he is backed by Scuderia Ferrari as part of their fabled Ferrari Driver Academy, and it will be their decision where the Briton goes next season, and this is why he is not currently marked as a potential driver for 2021.

“He’s not on the list because he’s a Ferrari driver,” Steiner is quoted as saying by Motorsport.com.  “He’s Read the rest

Mick Schumacher is a “copy of his father”

Mick Schumacher will make his debut in free practice tomorrow and that is a great milestone for the son of the seven-time world champion. Later this year Schumacher will be in action again and rumours are that he will compete in the Alfa Romeo next year. He will probably sit next to veteran Kimi Raikkonen.

Copy of his father

The eyes are logically on Schumacher, who will take an important step in his career tomorrow. It is also a way to see if he really is ready for Formula 1. Raikkonen will at least see his father back in him. “He’s a copy of his father in many ways, and it’s great to see him. I think it’s nice that he’ll be in the car tomorrow.”

“Obviously it’s sad for Antonio, but it’s FP1 and hopefully the weather can be kind of OK so we’ll get the normal running. If … Read the rest

Trackhouse signs Daniel Suarez for 2021 Cup debut

Daniel Suárez is on the move again, and he’s heading to a new team. The project is led by former driver Justin Marks, and will run all thirty-six races next year after acquiring a charter from Spire Motorsports.

“The formation of a top-level NASCAR Cup Series team has been a dream of mine for a long time,” Marks said. “A lot of hard work has transpired to get us to this point and I don’t think we could’ve ended up with better partners in RCR and Chevrolet, and with a more passionate and committed driver than Daniel Suárez. Daniel’s drive and hunger to get to the top of this sport is palpable every time I am in his presence. We are building a team of winners Read the rest

‘I Should Have Won’ on Formula 1’s Last Visit to the Nürburgring – Romain Grosjean

Formula 1 returns to the Nürburgring for the first time since 2013 this weekend, and for Romain Grosjean, he feels he should have become a Grand Prix winner at the circuit that year.

But for a safety car driver, the current Haas F1 Team racer, then driving for the Lotus F1 Team, was on course for his maiden Formula 1 race victory, but he ultimately finished third behind Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel and his Lotus team-mate Kimi Räikkönen.

Grosjean admits he has not had the chance to re-learn the track on the simulator ahead of the Eifel Grand Prix, so he will be using his memory to reacclimatise to the Nürburgring, something he will have to do from second practice as Callum Ilott will drive in the first session in his place.

“To be fair, 2013 was a very long time ago, so I’m Read the rest

Italian media reports on Ferrari’s aero updates for Nurburgring and Portimao

Scuderia Ferrari has already brought the necessary aerodynamic updates for the car in recent weeks and that will be no different this weekend in Germany. The Italians continue to work on the balance of the car which has been very bad since the start of the season.

Gradually the Maranello team seems to be crawling out of the valley, especially when it comes to the chassis of the car. The last Grands Prix came to the Italians with small adjustments to the car for aerodynamics. The Italian branch of Motorsport.com will also make some changes this weekend.

New adjustments
At the last Grand Prix in Russia, Ferrari took seventh place with a few improvements to the car. For Germany, some updates that have worked on the simulator will be brought back. Ferrari would come with other barge boards, changes to the rear suspension and the newly designed diffuser.
